I’m going to try and restrain myself whilst writing this article when really all I want to do is scream. What will they think of next for yet another unnecessary money making scheme that relieves people of nothing more than their money?
So I think it’s pretty clear where I stand on vitamin drips but here is why.
Once there was a situation where IV drips were saved for hospital and clinical settings but the lines between clinical and beauty are starting to get pretty blurred. We now have botox injections, chemical peels and minor skin treatments which can all help to build someone’s self confidence. However, when it comes to diagnosing someone with a vitamin deficiency and then hooking them up to an IV drip in the hope that it will ‘boost’ their vitamin profile, this is a step too far in the wellness space. This is without even mentioning the use of these drips as a hangover cure. The big reveal here, you are just rehydrating, which you could do by drinking some very inexpensive hydration salts that you buy in the chemist.

Here is how the body works and why high dose vitamins are a complete waste of money and could actually be quite dangerous.
Learning how to insert an IV drip is a skill that is learnt by nurses in a clinical setting. Chances are if you are heading to an IV vitamin party you may not know whether the person doing the procedure is trained, to what standard and to what level of hygiene. Don’t forget this drip is going into your vein, it’s not an injection into subcutaneous tissues, it’s a vein.
The body is very clever, its ultimate goal is to create homeostasis or equilibrium. That means excessive amounts of anything including vitamins will be processed and discarded by the liver and kidneys. It is impossible for the body to store extra of any vitamins and minerals. It will take what it needs and discard the rest. There are other factors to be considered, certain vitamins and minerals can only be absorbed when transported in fat or when accompanied by another vitamin or mineral. This makes the use of high dose vitamins an unnecessary procedure, with unnecessary risk at unnecessary expense.
If you would like to improve your daily intake of vitamins and minerals take a look at your overall diet. Include a good variety of plant foods, protein sources, fruits and vegetables and I can promise you will meet your daily intake for vitamins and mineral. If you do suspect you have a deficiency, seek the help of a trained medical professional who can diagnose and treat your deficiency appropriately.
